Super TroopersI’m a huge fan of Broken Lizard, so much so that I’ll even defend the widely panned “Club Dread” until I’m blue in the face. But like most lovers of the comedy troupe, I’m most at home with “Super Troopers,” their glorious highway cop movie filled with pranks, schemes, ugly truck drivers, Shenanigans and tons of hilarity.

Given my affinity for that movie, I’m understandably psyched about today’s news that a “Super Troopers” sequel is officially in the works. During an interview with Movie Cultists to promote the upcoming film “The Slammin’ Salmon,” the Broken Lizard gang offered a quick update on the much hoped-for sequel.

“We have the financing,” said “Super Troopers” director and star Jay Chandrasekhar. “So we’re going to try to make a deal with Fox.”

“We’re like, three drafts into it,” added Steve Lemme, who played the overly aggressive Mac in the film. “It’s funny, because we have an independent financier — we have a lot of independent financiers — who are like, ‘Give us that f—ing movie.’ And we’re like, ‘We will, we will but we have to go through a studio first.’ But it’s a great thing to go to a studio and say, ‘We have the money.’”

The guys added that Brian Cox — who played the highway patrolmen’s leader Captain John O’Hagan in the first film — would have a role in the sequel. The inclusion of Cox is awesome for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that he was hilarious in the first movie.

But if I’m remembering correctly — and forgive me if I’m not — the original plan for “Super Troopers 2” was to do a prequel set in the 1970s, focusing on the original gang’s parents. That’s a funny idea and all, but I’d rather see a sequel where our heroes are full-fledged members of the Spurbury Police Department, as seen at the end of the first film. With Cox involved in “Super Troopers 2,” I think the likelihood of a direct sequel goes way up. But who knows — a ’70s version of Cox’s character, as played by an obviously older Cox, could still be pretty funny.

In addition to “Super Troopers 2,” the comedians also have plans in the works for a “Beerfest” sequel titled “Pot Quest” — “they can’t make a straightforward ‘Potfest’ because it’ll be at a different studio,” reports the website — and a new film titled “Rogue Scholars,” which focuses on college professors squaring off against a campus club.
