Biograph is the last truly independent film and entertainment company, and the oldest movie company in America, established in 1895. On May 6th, 2004, a monument, for the first movie ever made in Hollywood back in 1910, a Latino based melodrama “In Old California” made by the Biograph Company was dedicated in Hollywood.
The movie is of Mexico-owned California, and is an insight into the life and times of the history of Mexico, Spain, and Mexican-Americans in California. Since this was the subject matter chose for the first movie in Hollywood, it also shows the impact Latinos played in the beginning Hollywood and the movie industry.
The monument was dedicated and erected on Vine Street near Hollywood Blvd. Many of the monument’s supporters included the now former Los Angeles City Mayor James K. Hahn, who proclaimed May 6th as “Biograph Day” to commemorate the founding of Hollywood for the movie industry by Biograph. Biograph also received a State Senatorial Award presented by Senator Sheila Kuehl and accolades from Congressman Henry Waxman.
Almost one year after the monument was erected, it disappeared overnight. What happened to the monument remained a mystery until now.
The monument was found at an undisclosed location on Vine Street. It was discovered by several younger celebrities during an event. When the monument was found, it had been broken, beaten, and vandalized, but not beyond repair. If it had not been found, most likely this piece of history would have been hauled to the city dump.
The cause for this is still under investigation, but neither Biograph nor any other agency had been notified of its whereabouts until now.
President/CEO of Biograph states “We were very happy to find the monument that means so much to the history of the movies, and the Latino community involvement in the beginning of the movie industry.”
Because of the increase of film production and the arts in downtown Los Angeles, Biograph has relocated its studio and office operations, and plans are for a re-dedication of the restored monument in downtown Los Angeles are in the works. Bond concludes “It needs to be where there is the new revitalization of movies, the arts and the ethnic importance of community that Biograph stands for.”
