    This surge protector was recommended by several audio and home theatre internet sites. It’s solid in construction and is aesthetically pleasing. There are three indicator lights that serve as a heads up as to wether the surge protector is working properly or not. The 10 outlets are labeled (DVD, Amp, receiver,CBL/SAT, etc.). It also comes with additional labels if you have two of any electronic device or do not like the label arrangment on the surge protector. The outlets are spaced out so its easy to fit as many as 6 transformers onto the surge protector. On the side of the surge protector are inputs for a phoneline and an internet line. The device also allows protection for up to three coaxial cables. The output Watt capacity is 1440 watts. This surge protector has allowed me to safely and adequately protect everything in my room. It is great if you want to organize all the wires behind a desk or TV/audio stand. I am thoroughly impressed with the device and would recommend it to anyone.

    So I built a new home theater recently with the following devices:

    * 65″ WD-65831 TV

    * XBox 360 + HD-DVD Player

    * Nintendo Wii

    * Sony VCR

    * Motorola 6200 Set Top Box

    * Onkyo 990 THX Sound System (Receiver + Sub use power)

    So every single plug on this thing is full… I was really worried I hadn’t bought big enough even though this is the 2nd from the top of the line Tripp Lite that is made and I have to say it’s been performing like an absolute champ. I’ve never had a surge or power failure. Even when I flip all 3 of the most power hungry devices on at once (using Harmony remote) there is no indication that there isn’t enough power.

    My wife and I have watched a few movies through some pretty serious monsoons here with no ill effects… I wouldn’t advise that, but we were right in the middle of the movie and didn’t want to stop.

    I would absolutely buy this again or anything else from Tripp Lite. The power block itself is really heavy, made out of strong steel, nicely labeled and just a top notch piece of electronics. Not to mention the warranty covering damage due to a power surge up to 200k I believe.

    I purchased the HT10DBS about 2 years ago. It has great price to performance ratio. Tripp lite is well known for their Isobar surge suppression units which are top of the line. I have always used their products for my computers. When it was time to a high end home theater system, I opted for the HT10DBS. I do not regret it. The unit has sturdy construction and has a line conditioner built in. Last fall we had a lightning strike in our front yard while my system was on and it totally saved my AV units while frying one of the neighbor’s cars (the electrical system was toast!). There are other more famous and marketed brands out there which charge more for their products (you know who they are). Don’t bother with them, stick with Tripp lite!

    Now I have not had any lightning strikes to test this out but I like its feature set and its price which is so much less than over priced monster. There is no “line conditioner” but my picture is crystal clear before and after I hooked up the Tripp.

    Also, my DirecTV installer (who was lame) said that no surge protector works with the satellite and not to bother. Well I did bother and the channels change fine without a “surge break.” The tech guy for DirecTV said it is hit or miss and after changing all the channels without difficulty this one is a hit.

    Works as expected and was given high marks in other home theater reviews. The only complaint I have is that it has 3 working L.E.D’s. Two of them are in green which means it’s functioning properly and one of them (The gound ) is in red which leads you to believe that the outlet is not grounded properly. However, red is good in this case. I guess if it didn’t light at all it would be bad. IMHO, I think all three should be green. Don’t you?

    This is good introductory reading for high school students who are seriously interested in theater. A wonderful yet solid history of the American theater occupies the front half of the book, but historical threads are found throughout. There is an insightful chapter on Sondheim and his creative processes. The section entitled “Elements of Musical Theater” is at times tedious reading, but informative. Kislan’s “Problems and Issues”(what’s wrong with the present Broadway scene)is an eye-opener. Some drawbacks: Much has happened to the theater since this 1995 edition. I would love an updated third edition. Many of the musical examples mentioned are in every theater-lover’s listening library, but a new edition should include an accompanying recording(or at the very least a CD and/or video guide). This would be particularly helpful with regard to very early 20th century musical theater. Also, there are many wonderful musicals, composers & lyricists, and librettists who are not even referenced(Loesser,{Guys & Dolls is mentioned}Comden/Green, Schwartz{Pippin’s there, too} to name a few). Surely their contributions are significant. My students have enough savvy to catch these omissions. They’ll want to know why. Still in all, this is a good textbook for our youth.

    A plain vanilla introductory text suitable for students who find themselves taking a musical theater course to fill an elective. Because young people are less familiar with the history and art of musical drama than film, the highly accessible prose and tabloid formatting of this text would make it useful in a college as well as high school course. Readers who already count themselves as students of the theater, on the other hand, can not afford to miss Gerald Mast’s comprehensive and savvy history, “Can’t Help Singin’.”

    But most of us don’t. I bought this book expecting a history of the musical, and there are some interesting chapters on historical antecedents of the modern musical. But when it hits the 20th century, it bogs down in technical details of interest only to aspiring professionals: how to write good lyrics, how to structure the plot, even what’s wrong with the NY theater district. Deadly dull stuff. No discussion of great performers, no analyses of individual musicals, nothing.

    I have used this book as the text for a high school course on the broadway musical and found it to be excellent. It is not overly technical but has a nice user friendly feel for the novice. The historical thread it establishes from Kern to Hammerstein to Sondheim is crucial to understanding where we are and how we got here. Obviously there are other important influences, but it is a fine text to focus a very broad topic on the seminal developers of the form. Michael P. Smith, Hamden Hall Country Day School

    Richard Kislan shows care and concern in his research on the subject, and the facts he reports seem accurate. He is at his best on his chapters about the elements of musical theater, including the book, lyrics, the score, dance and design. Here he provides some nice insights, and the objective character of these topics compliments his writing skills. Unfortunately, his more subjective chapters on the history of the American musical reveal a turgid, laborious writing style that mitigates the effectiveness of his good research and organization of information. The paucity of information about musicals after 1980 (despite the 1995 revision) is an additional liability. The reasonable price of the book makes it still a good value despite the shortcomings.
